In Alaska, February 2 is observed as Marmot Day rather than Groundhog Day because few groundhogs exist in the state. The holiday was created by a bill passed by the Alaska Legislature in 2009 and signed by Governor Sarah Palin.

                        Film Night with Wendy Erd

                        7:45 Homer community based video facilitator, Wendy Erd will share how a video project in Yunnan and Vietnam germinated in the most wonderful way.  “The seed was a film I had worked on together with people from Port Graham about their Aluutiq language.  I shared their story at a community Doc Film Festival in Kunming and it rippled out to become this project,” she says.

                         The unprecedented story of passage of Alaska’s groundbreaking law, the Ainti-discrimination Act of 1945 featuring Elizabeth Peratrovich, a Tlingit woman who with other Alaska Natives overcame prejudice and bigotry through non-violent social change to win justice for all Alaskans.  This new PBS nationally-aired docu-drama, with Alaskan actors, re-enacts this untold and inspiring story.  Discussion to follow.  7 pm.
