First Friday Reception 5-7 PM.  First Friday art event to display entrees from the Drift....buoys around Kachemak Bay call to artists.  Stop by the CACS Headquarters building to see some of the art work created by community members and pick up a map to see where all of the artwork is on display around the community. Following the reception, pieces will be installed at sides on both sides of Kachemak Bay.  DRIFT hopes to challenge visual artists to create using buoys collected from Alaskan beaches.  Through this community art project, the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies hopes to inspire residents and visitors to Homer to contemplate the connection between themselves and the marine environment as they view the outdoor installations around town.  Perhaps, even, as we view the buoys that have been transformed by artists, we might call to mind how the buoys drifted to shore, our impact on marine habitats, and our power to protect it.  DRIFT is supported by the NOAA community-=based marine debris clean-up and prevention grant program.  Call 235-6667 for more information.

10-12             Harley Owners Group (HOG) hosts an annual state rally in different cities throughout Alaska.  This year, the Kenai Peninsula Harley Drivers won the bid and on June 10, 11 & 12, the hub location will be at the Dimond M Ranch on Kalifornsky Beach Road in Kenai.  They are expecting anywhere from 300-700 riders to come to Alaska from all over the world.  Two Touring rallies (rides from point A to point B) will be scheduled from Kenai to Homer, leaving Kenai on both Friday and Saturday at 10AM.  Guided groups will be limited to 50.  On Friday at 6 AM, they will also be doing a “KP500” – 500 miles on the Kenai Peninsula where they will leave Kenai at 6AM, head to Homer for breakfast and on to other peninsula locations from there to get in their 500 miles for the day.  It is also notable that many of these tourists will be extending their time in Alaska before or after the State Rally, so we may expect higher numbers of visitors at that time. We will also have our Homer Visitor Guides present at a table at the Rally hub in Kenai.  If a volunteer would like to be there to make a strong representation for the Chamber, please call Sharon at 235-7740.
