Keynote
Peter Harrison: "Back from the Dead: Torishima
Odyssey" 9am-10am.
Islands
& Ocean Visitor Center.
Few birds ever return from the abyss of
extinction. The story of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker
is a case in point. Occasionally, however a species
returns from that black hole and such a species is
the Short-tailed Albatross of Japan. Declared
extinct in the 1940's, a handful were rediscovered
at Torishima, an active volcano, in the 1950's, with
the first egg appearing in 1954. Since then, the
population has grown to perhaps a thousand or so.
This lecture covers the history of the species and
Peter's own journey, founded by New Yorker
magazine, to visit Torishima. The expedition
resulted in a 22-page profile article
published in New Yorker magazine and
highlighted the plight of the Short-tailed
Albatross. This bird today remains as one of the
planet's rarest and most threatened life forms - a
species that occurs off the Alaskan coast and once
threatened to close the Alaskan fisheries. Limited
seating. Sponsored by World Wildlife Fund.
