  • Homer Middle School
    • Youth Kenpo Karate class taught by Jesse Smith, First Dan Chinese Kenpo Kenpo, will introduce young participants to the art and sport of Kenpo Karate. The first time class is for 1st to 7th graders and is limited to 20 participants. Please register early to reserve a place in the class. WHEN: Tuesdays & Thursdays (Beginner), 5 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays (Advanced) 5 p.m. FEE: $6 per class or $130 for entire Fall or Winter session, payable to the instructor; plus $25 Community Schools fee per quarterly session.

·         Gymnastics Classes with Jeanne Parker  There are two sessions being offered through Community Schools. All classes are taught by Jeanne Parker. The Fall session is from September 28 until November 20.

·         Tumbling & Vaulting Classes Young Beginners Tumbling and Vaulting (ages 5&6) Tuesdays from 6:00-6:45p.m., FEE: $56.50 (7 classes) payable to instructor, plus $15 CS fee

·         Beginner II/Intermediate Tumbling and Vaulting (ages 7 & up having completed the Beginner tumbling class) Tuesdays & Thursdays; 6:45- 8:15p.m., September 29-November 19 (No classes 10/15 & 11/17) $150.50 (14 classes) payable to instructor, plus $25 CS fee

·         Intermediate Tumbling and Vaulting (instructor approval required) Mondays & Wednesdays; 6:30-8:00p.m., September 28-November 18 $172 (16 classes) payable to instructor, plus$25 CS fee

·         Advanced Tumbling and Vaulting (instructor approval required) Mondays & Wednesdays; 6:30 -8:30p.m., September 28- November 18 $258 (16 classes) payable to instructor, plus $25 CS fee

·         Fundamentals of Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop Through Community Schools, Instructor Josh Veldstra will instruct you in the fundamentals of digital photography and Adobe Photoshop.  The class will cover Digital Cameras, Introducing Adobe Photoshop, Adjusting Images and Using the Tools. Call Josh Veldstra for more information and questions at 299-6014.  Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:30-8:30p.m.  Ongoing starting on September 8.  $115 for eight classes, meeting twice a week. Participants pay for four weeks/eight classes at a time.

·         Fencing Lessons  Scott Meyer is facilitating this exciting sport offered  to participants  ages 12 and up. Level 1 participants learn the basic stance, attack and defense strategies, and will have hands-on experience with other classmates in teams of actual combat and judging. Level 2 participants work on smoothing and perfecting the foil and are introduced to the epee. Emphasis is on training for state competition. Participants must have a full uniform within one month after classes start to continue with course. Some equipment is available.  Mondays and Thursdays, September through May, 5:30-8:30p.m.  $75 every three months payable to Community Schools

·         Indoor Rock Climbing  Break into the sport of indoor rock climbing in a safe environment. Practice climbing techniques and the basics of safe tie-in, belay, and usable knots. Learn the importance of equipment care and use, communication, strength, and balance. Some equipment is available. Must be 6 or older to participate. Ongoing Tuesdays and possibly Thursdays, 6 - 8 p.m. Closed for Spring Break 3/17 & 3/19 and the summer. ·         Evening Pick Up Basketball Games are pick-up and called by the players. Good sportsmanship is a must. Please do not bring children. Teens are welcome, adults have first priority to play. Multiple courts available if needed. WHEN: Tuesdays and Thursdays, Ongoing 8 - 10p.m. Classes may be canceled or rescheduled due to high school events. ·         Homer Sirens: Women's Indoor Soccer  Indoor soccer for women with all levels of experience. Come join the Homer Sirens for fun indoor pick soccer and games. ·         Let’s Dance!! Social Partner Dancing with Jo Going

·         Level I  Have fun learning basic steps to 4 different partner dances. One dance will be taught each session: two-step, waltz, west coast swing, and cha-cha. Each session will begin with a review of the previous dance, to be followed by learning a new dance. ·         Latin Dance Workout Class Join Jeanette Aragones to have fun, relax, and get rid of stress while dancing. This class is designed to introduce creative movement with Latin music for participants of all ages. Come and learn the basic steps to salsa, meringue, and other Latin Dances and styles. Dance partner is not required. Contact Jeanette at 299-1127 for questions. WHEN: Wednesdays, 6:30 –7:30 p.m.  Ongoing during the Fall/Winter. ·         Shotokan Karate Meets on the lower level of the Kachemak Center.  The dojo is open Tuesday and Friday 4:30-7:30.  Class times 5-6, 6:15 – 7:15.  Attend one or both. Cost $60 per month.  Parents attend class free with child.  Beginners welcome any time.  Ages 6 & up  299-8132

·         Belly Dance I   This 2 hour class includes a thorough warm up with emphasis on strength building and flexibility. Students will learn an entry level choreographed veil dance. In addition we will be learning to dance with zills (finger cymbals). This is a fun class, really 2 classes in one, with this expanded format. Bring a yoga mat if you have one. ·         Belly Dance II This level 2 class will support and facilitate the developing dancer. Thorough warm up with emphasis on strength building and flexibility. This semester we will be developing moves for floor work as well as continuing with zills. The focus during this cycle of classes will be on new choreography with time also for reviews of dances. ·         Pilates             Pilates is a method of exercise to strengthen your core muscles, to stretch and strengthen the body to keep it in balance and alignment. As you strengthen your core and improve your posture and body mechanics you may be able to treat or avoid lower back and neck pain. In this course you will learn basic Pilates mat skills, breathing, posture, and the proper exercise technique using the neutral spine. Taught by a Physical Therapist, this course will stress proper positioning and technique. It is meant for all levels and abilities, and is safe for most people. Bring a yoga mat or towel to class. ·         Weight Room Save money and sign up with Community Schools to use a great collection of weight machines and free weights. Full-session passes will be available. Participants must dress appropriately and wear clean indoor sneakers. WHEN: Monday through Thursday, 6 - 8 p.m. Ongoing. ·         Art & Sport of Kenpo Karate  Welcome to the art and sport of Kenpo karate, the ultimate in street self-defense. Have you ever wondered what goes on in a Karate Dojo? Sweat, reflex, coordination, friendship, competition, and the rewards of personal achievement. Beginner and advanced level classes are taught by instructor Jesse Smith, First Dan Chinese Kenpo. Some video recording is used for instructional purposes. Adults and children 5 years and older are welcome. ·         Bicycle Mechanic Class  A bicycle is no more than a collaboration of simple machines that when maintained can make a world of difference in the quality of your ride. Get to know your bicycle from its point of view! In this course we will learn how they go together, how each part works, and how to maintain them for safety and a more efficient ride. The basics include safety, maintenance, and the mechanical know-how to keep you riding safer, longer, and further than ever before. Subsequent lectures to be determined at first to accommodate attendee’s s c h e d u l e s . Taught by Derek Reynolds, 226-2925. Classes have limited space so please call ahead. ·         Conversational Russian Would you like to speak and learn the Russian language? Galina from Kiev, Russia will be offering a basic conversational Russian class for 7 weeks.   • Haas Studio

10         HoWL

(Homer Wilderness Leadership School) will be doing a five week after school  beginner course (ages 10-13) starting on September 10 culminating in an overnight backpacking trip on October 9-10.  HoWL will have intermediate weekend clinics and backcountry expeditions for more experienced students.  Courses may include but are not limited to hiking, backpacking, camping, trekking, adventuring, conservation work, survival skills, leadership skills, and outdoor ethics.  See www.howlschool.net or call instructor Libby Bushell 399-0504.  Cost is $199.  Scholarships may be available.
