Local Businesses: If your event or issue relates to a specific business/industry area (i.e., health, retail, etc.) call other Chamber members and local businesses to ask if you could do a short presentation at their staff meetings, board meetings or with selected staff.

Get On Line: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and many other internet sites offer a free way to advertise your business to a new market. No money for your own website? Create a free "blog" to advertise your event or business through such places as gmail.com.

Fundraising Suggestions for Non Profits:

Cooperative Advertising: Offer sponsors/donors group advertising opportunities. For example, one big banner that has five business sponsors on it versus one business sponsor, split the sponsorship between five businesses to make it affordable.

Level or Sponsorship & Benefits: There are many small businesses out there that would love to support your event! Offer various levels of sponsorship with corresponding benefits to accommodate businesses with smaller budgets. Be creative in your sponsorship benefits: logos/names on banners, brochures, websites, products distributed; sponsor contact information sent out to participants; provide sponsor hotlinks on your website; thank you letters to the editor and/or newspaper ads; etc. Sponsor a specific item at your event, i.e., this table is sponsored by XX business.

Seek out all Businesses: Think about all the various businesses that will benefit from your event or organization and approach them about sponsorship or donations. Is you event bringing in visitors? Does it allow members to go back to work or school? Will you be purchasing supplies or other services locally? Suggestions include: lodging, dining, retail, education, supplies, utilities, etc. Check out the Chamber website or membership directory for contact information.

Economic Importance of your Event: Collect your data! How much money does your event or organization bring into the community? Do a survey with participants and visitors finding out on average how much they spent on lodging, restaurants, shopping, etc. How much does your organization provide to the community in the form of local jobs, money you and your employees spend in the community for operating expenses and supplies, support provided to community members so they can go back to school, find jobs, or maintain employment, etc. Track this information and use it when seeking grants, sponsorship and support from other organizations.

Direct Ask Mailings: Often a good way to fundraise is to just ask! Mail or contact all current, former and potential participants of your organization and their friends and family. Order a Chamber member mailing list. Do a direct mailing to the local area, post office boxes or peninsula (can coordinate through bulk mail house such as Print Works 235-8500).

Donation Cans: Many businesses are open to having a small donation can near their cash register to collect money for your organization or event. Be prepared to supply the can and collect donations in a timely manner.

$1/Ticket or Percent of Sales: Many businesses are willing to donate to your event or organization by giving you $1 from every ticket they sell at their business (such as fishing charter, concert or movie ticket, lodging reservation, etc.) or a percentage of proceeds from the day's sales. Connecting their business to your community-minded cause can increase their sales.
